First Grade

My name is Susan Schaum and I'm the new first grade teacher this year at Our Lady Queen of Mercy! It is such a pleasure to be teaching here both because it is a fabulous school and because I, myself, was a student in these hallways not all that long ago! In fact, I like to credit OLQM with my success as a student and later in my adult life. The warm, caring faculty and staff helped me realize my abilities and gain confidence that would serve me long after leaving! I am a graduate of the class of 2000 from Montgomery Catholic High School , now a part of the MCPS. I received my bachelor's in early childhood education from Auburn University in 2004 and completed my masters of education in early childhood the following December of 2005. While I had never expected to return to OLQM as a teacher, I truly believe that divine intervention helped place me here.
First grade is such an exciting time in a child's life! No longer are we the new kids on campus! It is my job to see each child reach and/or exceed his or her potential, and I will work tirelessly in the endeavor. Your children are my number one priority!
This year, I will focus strongly on developing each child's ability to understand the composition of written words and help them gain strategies for gathering meaning from the texts they read. I love to read and it is my hope that no child leaves my room without that same love!
Additionally, the children will use the previously learned concepts of number sense to explore addition and subtraction, patterns in mathematics, and logical reasoning to become problem solvers.
Through comprehensive thematic units, the children learn to explore our world in the areas of science and social studies. Ordinary themes of “pets,” “pumpkins,” or even “people in our community” come alive when integrated throughout the entire day! A varied schedule of guest speakers and field trips help to round out an exciting year in your child's life!
